External Fire Spread (Declan Thomson, Principal Fire Engineer at Hoare Lea)

Introduction to Fire Engineering (Dominic Way)

Dominic will give an overview of what fire engineering is and how it is used.  The 25 minute presentation will describe some of the methods used in fire engineering and discuss its limitations.  It will detail its relevance in the 21 century and briefly touch on some of the lessons of recent events.

The Regulatory Framework for Fire Engineering (Dr Jim McGonigal)

Jim will give a presentation on Legislation and Guidance relating to safety from Fire. It will examine how legislation has developed usually in relation to tragic fires, and the limitation inherent in the guidance that are not always clear. It will then touch on the role that alternative fire engineering approaches has in providing safe buildings.

External Fire Spread (Declan Thomson)

Although on the face of the it Tables 2.7 and 2.8 of the Non-Domestic Technical Handbook are relatively easy to apply, external fire spread calculations are not always applied correctly early enough in the design process, if at all. This can lead to costly design changes further down design development. This presentation will provide a brief background of external fire spread calculations (including other methods in BR187 and the benefits of sprinklers) and the importance of getting it right early on.
