The Laverty Family
Andy and Janet are private individuals. The family decided to come back home to Scotland and have established firm and happy roots in the Isle of Eriskay, well and truly becoming part of the community. As a result, the client wanted to support local contractors and businesses through this project. They commissioned BARD, a young practice with strong island roots to be architect. As well as that, Paul Macinnes, the main contractor actually lives within sight of the Bothy and took great pride building in his local community. The humanity shown by the client towards their design team, contractors and their new community that they are part of is reflected in the architecture.

New Gorbals Housing Association
NGHA have shown perseverance with strong vision throughout the NGHA office project, allowing the team to appropriately manage the design process. There were challenging brief requirements and budget limitations that required a particular close attention, which was matched by continued guidance and attentiveness from NGHA.
Further, a trusting and honest relationship between client and practice allowed the brief to be challenged and debated, teasing out ideas and design opportunities that may have otherwise been missed. These discussions took place throughout the RIBA work stages, giving the design team a continued and evolving design challenge. The resulting project has clearly benefited from this process leading to a higher client satisfaction and more bespoke and specific response to the brief.
The NGHA have an ongoing commitment to excellence in design and a passion for the sustainable redevelopment of the Gorbals. Debates around cost and distribution of project funds would prioritise the public facing elements of design, maximising investment into the community. The inclusion of the new Gorbals piazza within the project is a clear example of this.
