GIA CPD EVENT 2 - Grenfell, Hackitt and the Profession – 30th October 2019.

with Gordon Gibb

FRIBA FRIAS MCIArb Architect and Expert Witness

The fire at Grenfell Tower on 14 June 2017 started a process of change that will impact upon how high-rise residential buildings are designed, approved, constructed, renovated, occupied and maintained. Some lessons learned are covered in the report by Dame Judith Hackitt. Others have yet to be learned. Whist formal conclusions are awaited, Government is already asking questions of ARB and the RIBA about the fitness for purpose of architectural education. Gordon Gibb supervised a team of four students from the Mackintosh School who investigated the processes and failures that led to the fire and the devastation that it caused. This talk covers the research outcomes: the regulatory, consultation and procurement issues before the fire; the errors in design, construction and site management; the detail of the Hackitt Review and the impact that this will have on the future of architectural practice and education in the UK.
