Presidential Role Description

The President of the GIA is elected by the GIA membership on an annual basis, for a maximum of two consecutive years‐long terms. The post is the most senior within the organisation and is responsible for providing strategic leadership of the GIA Council in the establishment of the organisations goals and plans. The President must be a member of the RIAS and an Architect.

Duties of the GIA President

The below list is indicative of the duties of the GIA President. The role is however not limited to these and can be as expansive as a candidate desires. Conversely, their is room for delegation to appropriate members of GIA Council.

The President is expected to:

  •   Represent the GIA’s interests to the public and external bodies to maintain and enhance the influence of the organisation.

  •   Attend official functions and actively network to maintain and enhance the reputation of the organisation and profession.

  •   Actively contribute to, and liaise with, the RIAS, including the provision of a quarterly update on the organisations business.

  •   Establish the long‐term goals of the organisation and relay these to the GIA Council.

  •   Work closely with the GIA Committee Convenors to ensure the approach, activities and budgets are closely aligned.

  •   Preside at all meetings and events of the chapter and provide leadership to the GIA Council and Committees.

Activities breakdown:

GIA Council Meetings:

  • Coordinate and Chair 5 GIA Council meetings per year - the 6 annual meeting is the AGM, please see below.

  • Attend steering group meetings and GIA Committee Convener meetings as deemed appropriate.

GIA Design Awards / Annual Members Dinner:

  • Contact all guest /GIA judges

  • Assist in the organisation of judging teams

  • Review entries for shortlisting

  • Attend shortlisting meeting Judging visits

  • Judging meeting

  • Supreme award visits

  • Dinner speech

  • Dinner attendance/prep on the day

GIA Annual Lecture/AGM:

  • Prepare minutes/agenda and other required documentation

  • Chair the AGM

  • Host the Guest Speaker of the Annual Lecture

Student Awards:

  • Judging at the Glasgow School of Art

  • Judging at Strathclyde University

  • Attendance at GIA Student Awards Ceremony

Glasgow Urban Design Panel:

  • Attend GUDP as co-chair and work with the GUDP committee and GCC as required. Max 8no. meetings per year

  • Prepare GUDP panel notes

  • Meet with Glasgow City Council to discuss GUDP development

Social:

  • Attend events to represent the chapter and develop new opportunities for the GIA.

RIAS Council:

  • Attending regular RIAS Council meetings ‐ 4no. Meetings per year

  • Attending special meetings ‐ 3no. Meetings per year

  • Submit the RIAS Quarterly column GIA Chapter report

  • Attend AGM/SGM

  • Review RIAS correspondence, accounts & minutes

Miscellaneous:

  • Attending award ceremonies / misc events

  • Meet with GIA committees (as required)

  • Meeting with potential sponsors of GIA Events

  • Establish special projects with a variety of collaborators

  • External / internal competitions judging and / or awards
