Queen's Park Bandstand Competition
In April 2010, GIA launched a competition in association with Queen’s Park Arena for design proposals for a modern multi-purpose performance and activity space within Queen’s Park in Glasgow. The site was the derelict former bandstand and amphitheatre near to Victoria Road.
Following a site visit and community workshop, entries were displayed at the Glasshouse during the Southside Festival and a public vote was taken. A shortlist was then drawn up for discussion and presentation to judges followed in September.
The winning scheme by ZM Architecture proposed a robust metal structure with hinged panels allowing for a variety of uses. This scheme has received planning permission and is currently being developed for further funding applications. The first phase consisting of ground works, landscaping and associated works will start on site shortly, to be completed by the park’s 150th anniversary in summer 2012. This is being funded by the Landfill Communities Fund, the Southside Central, Pollokshields and Langside Area Committees of Glasgow City Council and the Strathbungo Society.
