Kilcreggan Design Competition

Glasgow Institute of Architects, in association with Rosneath Peninsula West Community Development Trust invited entries from architects, design professionals and students to produce ideas for the rural community of Kilcreggan on the Roseneath Peninsula on the Firth of Clyde.

The aim of the design competition is to deliver a framework for the development of Kilcreggan over a 20 year horizon. From this the Community Development Trust wishes to identify projects or initiatives that can be implemented and phased over a period of time.

The judges were impressed by the quality and diversity of all 34 entries received, with the following six teams being shortlisted:

  • Gordon Murray Architects
  • Liam Madden & Neil Ferries
  • Konishi Gaffney Architects
  • Lucid Architecture
  • John Gilbert Architects
  • Siraaj Mitha, Ursala Marshall, Rauf Sami & Joseph Bodansky.

On Saturday in Cove Burgh Hall all six shortlisted finalists presented their proposals to the judges and over 100 members of the local community.

The judges were impressed by the quality and effort of each of the six shortlisted finalists, and deciding on the final prize list prompted lively debate amongst the judges. Each of our three prize winners had proposed innovative ways of using the foreshore to provide a range of uses and improve amenity. Proposed uses were sensitive to the village context and were practical as well as innovative.

1st Prize:
09 – Konishi Gaffney Architects
2nd Prize:
06 – Lucid Architecture
3rd Prize:
02 – Gordon Murray Architects

The judges considered Konishi Gaffney Architects propsals to provide some particularly innovative and well considered events along a new foreshore promenade, which could form a template for other rural communities to reinvigorate their communities by improving the amenity of their settlements and making them attractive as a destination for others.

Through its Architecture People and Places (AP&P) committee, whose objective is: ‘the promotion of Architectural and Urban Design matters that can provide tangible benefit to the wider public’, the GIA supported the community council in delivering this exciting design competition.

The GIA would like to thank our sponsor, Community Links Scotland and our competition partner, Roseneath Peninsula West Community Development Trust for their support and collaboration on the project. The GIA would like to thank all who entered and those who presented on the prize night.
