Design Awards 2016
Ballymena Health and Care Centre
Keppie Design Ltd & Hoskins Architects
Winner: Design Award
Ballymena Health and Care Centre was designed by Keppie Design and Hoskins Architects for the Northern Health and Social Care Trust through the PCCI Framework for Northern Ireland Estates. The Centre opened to the public in February 2016. The 8,000m2 centre, situated on the existing Braid Valley Hospital site, brings together a wide range of primary, intermediary, diagnostic and community health facilities. The clinical departments are split across two floors and organised around the main arrival space, a large atrium and an open courtyard. This assists the building users’ orientation and allows natural daylight and ventilation to the large number of cellular spaces that make up each department. On the third floor, staff office accommodation is located around the atrium beneath the undulating roof. Externally the building is dramatically defined by its saw-tooth roofline, while still sitting peacefully amongst its existing neighbours.
