Lairdsland Primary School
Walters & Cohen Architects
Winner: Design Award
Walters & Cohen completed Lairdsland Primary School in April 2015. The school, for 280 pupils aged 4-11, is on a site adjacent to the Forth and Clyde Canal. The location of the building was explored with the school community, whose preference was to identify the school with the canal; this resulted in locating the building parallel to the water to make the most of the unique site.
The two-storey school is designed to suit a range of teaching and learning styles. Classrooms do not have doors; glazed screens delineate the main classroom, yet the teaching area expands into the open-plan heart space that runs the length of the building. Flexible furniture, double-height glazing on the canalside and the use of vivid colour make this a bright and lively space that pupils and staff can shape to their own needs.
The school has a strong presence on the towpath and the marina, improving the sense of community in this industrial area. One pupil even travels to school by canoe with her dad.
