Design Awards 2015
Boys and Girls - Bloomfield House
Winner: Design Award
Marc Kilkenny-Architects (“MK-A”) was selected through a design competition to create a new work environment for advertising agency Boys And Girls, whose new building, fittingly, is a former primary school. Boys and Girls’ delightfully simple brief requested a creative and collaborative space that would reinforce their brand, described as “fun and playful, but not juvenile or childish.”
Working within a limited budget, we approached structural alterations with a light touch, with a view to yielding maximum spatial transformation. After setting about undoing some of the worst impositions of the 1980s office conversion, we undertook a small number of key spatial moves designed to celebrate the history of the building’s original fabric and function.
The project provided ample opportunity to indulge our passion for collaboration with artists and crafts people. We designed and commissioned in Glasgow a diverse range of works including a large concrete boardroom table, a ping-pong table and ceiling, handmade work furniture, illuminated concrete coping stones and bespoke light fittings. We even re-engineered a balloon sculpture and designed and built an anamorphic installation.
As well as individual workspaces, our design included a number of breakout spaces for staff. Each has its own character and fulfils a variety of functions, from flexible working to informal meetings. A generous kitchen provides opportunity for rest and themed meeting rooms (concrete, lego, ping-pong) facilitate the serious business of presentation in light-hearted surroundings. The result is a stimulating and productive work environment that blends playful creativity with restrained elegance.
