Design Awards 2014
Scottish Crime Campus
Ryder Architecture and BMJ Architects (as Joint Venture)
Winner: Design Award
The Scottish Crime Campus is the Scottish Government’s largest single investment in architecture, a state-of-the-art facility providing 25,000sqm of high quality office accommodation, together with forensic laboratories and support facilities to enhance collaboration between various anticrime agencies.
The brief was complex in terms of adjacencies, security levels and noncontamination of evidence. As a consequence, a functional analysis provided a means of designing form through a metaphorical or allegorical interpretation of the key elements as visual cues to generate new forms, whilst requiring both legibility and liveability for all users. A strong design ethos was established based on technologies used in crime detection, with DNA and chromosome biology being selected as main themes.
