Restoration and Extension to Middleburn Cottage
Robert Potter & Partners LLP
The rehabilitation and careful restoration of a derelict traditional but and ben to create a new dwelling was a conservation project to restore the original building whilst designing a sympathetic and modest modern extension which would not result in the loss of historic character.
Preservation where at all possible of the existing fabric to retain the integrity of the original building was key, together with the use of ecological building materials including lime, hemp and wool by carrying out repairs using traditional techniques. An honest approach to good repair that did not hide imperfections was used.
The rear extension was designed to complement the original building and is barely visible when viewed from the front and when viewed from the hills this merges into the landscape due to the use of natural timber and turf.
The Client carried out several works themselves to learn new practical conservation skills and the result is a dwelling with plenty of character and rustic charm.
