50 George Square and the David Hume Tower Basement
Page Park Architects
50 George Square was designed by Robert Matthew, Johnston-Marshall and Partners, and completed in 1970. It is Category B listed and forms part of a Category A listed grouping. This grouping is a key example of Scottish Modernism.
50GS and the David Hume Tower Basement were stripped back to their concrete frames, retaining their stone façades and reconstructing their windows. This gave us the opportunity to carefully insert a new interior with central atrium stair and add roof extensions. The lower ground floor courtyard space has been partially in filled, additional linking elements inserted from podium level and the internal spaces opened up.
By maintaining the formal organisational systems of the buildings as originally intended, by careful and sensitive intervention and a thorough and robust conserving and reconstruction of the original fabric we have, hopefully, maintained the original spirit of the buildings yet adapted their programmes for the 21st century.
