The modernisation of this typical inter-war bungalow was achieved through extensive consultation with the Planning Authority leading to a new precedent being set in the application of Conservation Area planning guidelines. Previous, ad-hoc additions had left a legacy of inefficient plot use, a complex and vulnerable roof form and a building whose development history was illegible. An element of formal restraint was appropriate in the context and represented an opportunity to re-assess a common conversion typology.
The approach was to consolidate, rationalise and complement the existing with architecture of rigour and confidence, without resorting to wilful aesthetic moves.
Interventions are legible through detail and material, resulting in a holistic, efficient piece of architecture rather than a piecemeal add-on. A monochrome palette and simple detailing defers to the brick, render and tiling of the original building without subservience, allowing for a singular, clear expression.
