Design Awards 2013
Eastwood High School
BDP - Design Architects *
Winner: Design Award
BDP won the competition to design the new Scottish Futures Trust Pilot Schools at Eastwood and Lasswade. This unique project brought together the experience and expertise of two Councils, namely East Renfrewshire and Midlothian working alongside the Scottish Futures Trust and BDP to design, procure and deliver innovative and cost effective solutions for new secondary schools.
The Pilot Schools Project included the new Eastwood High School for 1220 pupils in East Renfrewshire. The design challenge was in part to maximise commonality between both schools where applicable, yet maintain the individual school’s particular identity and character. Commonality included well designed and efficient building “blocks” such as classrooms, staff bases, and ancillary spaces bringing economy in design and construction. Special teaching, learning and social spaces were created within the central “heart space” bringing drama, flexibility and identity.
BDP embarked on extensive consultation and engagement working with groups of pupils, staff and the community through interactive workshops before both Councils settled on the Deep Plan concept which was the most popular, and met the stringent criteria. We understand that this is the first time this particular school design concept has been adopted in Scotland. In addition, the Pilot Schools are designed as “Community Schools” with the emphasis on creating places for people i.e. for the whole community to learn in, share and enjoy.
At Eastwood many of the facilities are accessible to the local community so it was important to create a warm and welcoming environment yet maintain discrete access control and security.
