Winner: Wood for Good Award
Winner: Sustainability Award
East Whins is an innovative ecovillage developed with a range of affordable housing options, a mix of housing types and designed with the involvement of the community. There are 25 homes with co-housing facilities including a common room, kitchen and meeting room. The scheme incorporates a communal laundry with passive solar drying room, bike store and workshops and was built as two clusters with social spaces to strengthen community bonds.
Passive solar design is at the heart of the development. Sunspaces maximise usable passive solar gain; south facing roof pitches maximise solar panel efficiency at the spring and autumn equinox. The homes are designed and built to a high standard of energy efficiency and could meet 2014 Building Standards. Mechanical ventilation systems with heat recovery ensure the heating systems are as efficient as possible, and underfloor heating is fed by an air source heat pump in connection with solar thermal panels. East Whins is connected to Findhorn’s wind turbine supply, making the entire community zero carbon.
