Small Practice Portfolio
Category: Small Practice
Winner: Design Award
DO-Architecture was founded in 2005 by Adrian Stewart and is currently staffed by himself, Judith Wylie Macleod and Elizabeth Robertson Stewart. Based in the the city centre, our shopfront allows us to maintain a strong connection to people, the street and the city.
A small multi-disciplinary studio, the practice celebrates diversity and works in close collaboration with individuals from more varied disciplines than the other professions who work in the construction sector. In addition to making buildings, we develop and deliver projects with artists, film makers, writers, musicians and scientists who offer a vital critique and alternative perspective on our work.
If we consider a space, building or a city as a living organism, then every client, project and site has a distinct genetic make up, such that our approach to understanding the character of the site, client or programme cannot be standardised. We believe that before we can make any proposal we need to understand place and people, reflecting on the urban scale and the minutiae,a and everything in-between.
Our portfolio of completed and ongoing work demonstrates our commitment to the values we describe, from project based work such as Heliotrope (an immersive installation that explores our relationship with light), and Critical Dialogues at the 2012 Venice Biennale, to creating homes for Govan and Linthouse and renewing community spirits through our various site specific lighting installations. Our design for the foyer at the CCA enhances their street presence, and strengthens their aspirations for the future.
