The existing building was an unimaginative bungalow conversion of a MOD lookout on the shore of Loch Long, a spectacular site with a magnificent view down the Firth of Clyde. The brief was to create a five bedroom holiday residence, and the architectural idea was to create a Capetown beach house on the West Coast of Scotland. The existing roof was kept for financial reasons, and the building was opened up internally and extended to create additional bedrooms from the existing garage. The elevation to the loch was pushed forward and glazed with frameless glazing, which gives a wonderful backdrop to the open plan living area, while a slate covered wall contains a woodburning stove and built in television monitor, making a solid and comforting focus to the room. A door leads to a covered terrace and barbecue area, which leads directly to the shore.
